The Results

Our recent in-depth analysis of salaries in the UK architecture industry, with a focus on London areas, combined data from various sources, including our own database of over 2,000 architecture professionals, as well as insights from recognised organisations such as the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and Pay100.

It’s essential to note that the salary guide provided serves as a rough guide based on widely reported salary norms in London. Salaries may vary significantly based on specific contexts and ever-changing market conditions.

The Pay Disparity Paradox

A noteworthy revelation emerged when comparing our findings to the RIBA salary survey. While our data closely aligned with that of Pay100 and our competitors, there was a stark contrast with RIBA’s findings. The RIBA survey reported significantly lower salaries, with differences as significant as 6-20% in reported average salaries.

This divergence may have contributed to a growing discontent among architectural professionals, potentially explaining the increased interest in vacancies outside of traditional architecture.

Salary Dynamics in a Changing Landscape

Salaries in the architecture industry have seen an average increase of 3-8%. While this is certainly a positive development, in real terms, despite a marginal improvement in remuneration, architects today may find themselves worse off than their counterparts a decade ago.

This presents a challenge, and while most employers would like to offer higher salaries, it may not be feasible unless significant changes occur within the industry.

The past couple of years have been marked by volatile market changes, which have shaken confidence in the profession and made it challenging for many practices to achieve meaningful profits.

However, through adversity comes progress. Extensive research into industry reports, such as The Glenigan Construction Review 2023 and CBRE’s Market Outlook Report 2023, coupled with insights from the last eight months of RIBA’s Future Trends Survey, suggest that significant improvements are on the horizon.
