Presentation Matters

First impressions last — that old saying rings notably true for portfolios. A polished, professional presentation speaks volumes about your attention to detail and the quality of work one can expect from you.

  • Quality Over Quantity: Include high-resolution images of your projects. This allows your target audience to absorb all the intricate details of your designs.

  • Narratives That Speak: Share a short and engaging story for each project, including the project brief, any standout goals or challenges, your role in the design process, and the final outcome. Remember to use brief descriptions and bullets to emphasise important details and keep focus on the visual impact of the work, without overwhelming the viewer with excessive text.

  • Consistent Styling: Keep your portfolio cohesive. From your CV to the showcasing of projects and your skills, maintaining consistency breeds sophistication.

Be Selective in Project Selection

  • Diverse, Yet Focused: Choose a 3-6 of your most notable projects that highlight your range of abilities and creativity such as residential, commercial or hospitality design. However, be cautious not to appear unfocused — remember, curate according to your area of expertise and the types of companies you are applying to.

  • Professional & Personal: Display personality by demonstrating some of your personal projects or personal creative interests at the end of your portfolio. You may have redesigned your living space — flaunt it! This demonstrates your personal style, taste, and innovation. If you enjoy photography, art, creating furniture - make sure to include these in your portfolio making sure they are visually appealing.

Showcasing Your Design Process

Your portfolio should be more than just a pretty picture presentation. Showcasing your design process reveals your expertise and offers insight into how you turn ideas into reality.

  • Progress Snapshots: Showcase different stages of your design process — from initial sketches or mood boards to the final outcome.

  • Client Collaboration: Highlight situations where you adapted your designs to cater to client needs or feedback. This demonstrates your flexibility and respect for clients' perspectives.

Bonus Tips

  • The Basics: Create an introductory cover page and thank you page with contact details. You may also want to include a contents page to tell the viewer what's to come.

  • Avoid Clutter: Tell a story across 2-3 pages per project, starting with the strongest project image to grab immediate attention followed by supporting information. Don't try to pack everything in on one page. Use plenty of white space to make information stand out.

  • Graphics: Don't distract from your work with dark or busy backgrounds. A white or light grey background is always a safe option. If you want to show more personality, we encourage you to do so but ensure your colour scheme, typography, spacing and page layouts are consistent throughout for a cohesive and professional look.

  • Drawings: Incorporate strong concept sketches, mood boards, floor plans and elevations, visuals, material and finish samples, custom furniture design and joinery details or other drawings that showcase your range of skills and involvement. Keep them clean and clear, adding concise captions and only necessary annotations to maintain visual appeal.

  • Size: Keep the portfolio within the 15MB limit but maintain image quality: reduce pages or drawings if needed.

  • Update and refresh regularly. Keep your portfolio up to date with your latest projects, removing older or less representative work. Regularly review and refine your portfolio to ensure it reflects your current skills and style.

  • Lastly, remember to stay authentic. Your portfolio is a mirror reflecting your uniqueness and creativity, so ensure it does that effectively.

An effectively curated interior design portfolio can open doors to exciting new opportunities and collaborations. Be patient, methodical, and true to your personal style.

Creating a portfolio takes time, dedication, and strategic thinking — all hallmarks of successful interior designers. Don't hesitate to innovate and think outside the box. That's ultimately what will set you apart from the crowd.
